John Stamos Reveals His Ex-Wife Considered Him "Stupid"
John Stamos has candidly shared that he has struggled to move past certain remarks made by his ex-wife regarding his intelligence. The beloved star of "Full House," who was married to actress Rebecca Romijn from 1998 until their divorce in 2005, opened up during an episode of Bill Maher’s podcast, Club Random. He recounted how Romijn believed he lacked the intellectual capacity to fit in with her circle of friends.
"There was a relationship I had where she mentioned she thought I was stupid or not smart enough to be around her people and things like that," he revealed to Maher. This admission sheds light on the emotional impact those words had on him. The Daily Beast has reached out for comments from both Romijn and Stamos.
When Maher inquired whether there was any lingering tension between Stamos and Romijn’s current husband, Jerry O’Connell, Stamos clarified that this was not the case. However, he did express that he has not entirely reconciled with the hurtful comments he attributed to Romijn. "I never sort of got over it... but I thought to myself, I’m not stupid," he stated. He acknowledged that while he wasn’t particularly articulate in political discussions—having grown up in a family that did not emphasize political engagement—he made an effort to educate himself.
Stamos mentioned that he has learned a great deal from Maher’s work, saying, "I learned everything from you. I’ve read your book; I appreciate how you present complex ideas simply." Despite his generally apolitical stance, he referred to Maher as a "genius" and his guiding influence.
In April, after attending an event at Mar-a-Lago, Stamos faced backlash from fans who interpreted his presence there as a shift in his political views, especially given his previous associations with figures like Joe Biden and Barack Obama. He took steps to clarify his position at that time, stating that his core values and political perspectives remained unchanged. In contrast, his reflections on his marriage to Romijn have evolved over the years.
While promoting his memoir, "If You Would Have Told Me," released in 2023, Stamos admitted to People magazine, "Back then, I viewed her as the Devil; I couldn’t believe how much resentment I harbored, and it really affected my life." Over time, he recognized that he bore some responsibility for the relationship’s failure, reflecting, "You start to think, ‘Oh, she wasn’t the Devil. Maybe I was just as much to blame as she was.’"
Stamos found love again and married model and actress Caitlin McHugh in 2018, demonstrating that while past relationships can leave deep scars, healing and growth are always possible.
