Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil is leading the charge, emphasizing the need for teacher preparedness. The Teacher Education Institute (IPG) will play a pivotal role in mobilizing this initiative. Fahmi revealed, "We're looking at a potential scenario where we'll have both six and seven-year-olds entering Year One. This means we need to boost our teacher numbers to ensure quality education for all."
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is closely monitoring the situation. After launching the National Education Development Plan, he's instructed the Education Ministry to scrutinize preparations, especially for five-year-old preschoolers and six-year-olds transitioning to Year One. This involves more than just funding; the Finance Ministry is tasked with expediting financial processes while adhering to established procedures.
And here's where it gets interesting: The Works Ministry, particularly the Public Works Department, is stepping in to construct new classrooms using the innovative Industrialised Building System (IBS). This modern approach to construction will ensure that schools can accommodate the expected increase in student numbers.
But that's not all. Fahmi also highlighted the need to have teachers on standby through the IPG to support institutions like tahfiz, which are preparing students for the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM), specifically in Bahasa Malaysia and History.
When it comes to funding, Fahmi assured that the primary focus is on teacher numbers rather than salary adjustments. He confirmed that teachers, along with other civil servants, recently received salary increases on January 22.
