Pac-12's Impact on the WNBA: Mercury's Connection to the Conference's Stars (2026)

The Pac-12 Tournament: A Launchpad for WNBA Stars

The Pac-12 Conference has been a breeding ground for exceptional talent, with numerous players going on to achieve success in the WNBA. The tournament, which began in 2002, has been a platform for these athletes to showcase their skills and launch their professional careers.

One of the earliest recipients of the Most Outstanding Player award was Nicole Powell, who won it three times consecutively. After her impressive performances, she was drafted by the Charlotte Sting and went on to play for the Sacramento Monarchs, winning a championship with them. Another standout player, Candice Wiggins, followed in her footsteps, winning the award in her first season with the Minnesota Lynx and later adding a championship to her resume.

Over the years, the Pac-12 has produced a string of talented players, including the Ogwumike sisters, Nneka and Chiney. The conference's influence in the WNBA continued to grow, and eventually, players with ties to the Mercury emerged as top performers.

Alanna Smith, the 2019 Most Outstanding Player, led Stanford to a victory over Oregon. Her exceptional skills caught the attention of the Mercury, who drafted her and she played for them for three seasons. Last year, Smith and A'ja Wilson were named Co-Defensive Players of the Year, further solidifying the conference's impact on the league.

Kiana Williams, another Stanford standout, was named Most Outstanding Player and helped her team beat UCLA. She was later drafted by the Seattle Storm and has since played for the Mercury, showcasing the tournament's ability to launch careers.

The most recent addition to this list is Haley Jones, who won the award and helped her team beat Utah. Jones, after starting her career with the Atlanta Dream, spent some time with the Mercury last season, playing four games before joining the Dallas Wings. The Pac-12 Tournament, set to return in 2027, promises to unveil more future WNBA stars.
