The Philippines is witnessing the birth of a groundbreaking energy project: the world's largest solar-battery hybrid system. This ambitious undertaking, known as the MTerra Solar Project, is a testament to the country's commitment to renewable energy and sustainable development. With a massive scale and rapid progress, it's set to revolutionize the energy landscape.
Meralco PowerGen Corporation (MGEN), a leading Filipino energy generator, has achieved a remarkable feat. Just 15 months after breaking ground, the initial phase of the MTerra Solar Project has been officially synchronized and energized. This project, spanning six municipalities in the provinces of Nueva Ecija and Bulacan, is a testament to the power of collaboration and innovation.
The MTerra Solar Project boasts an impressive 3.5 gigawatts (GW) of solar power and 4.5 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of battery energy storage when fully operational. The first phase, already connected to the Filipino grid, contributes 2.5 GW of solar and 3.3 megawatt-hours (MWh) of battery storage. The second phase will further enhance the project's capabilities with 1 GW of solar and 1.2 GWh of battery storage.
One of the project's critical infrastructure components is the 500 kV substation along the Nagsaag–San Jose 500-kV Line 2. The recent energization and activation of this substation demonstrate the project's progress and grid integration capabilities. Despite the initial phase's limited capacity of 250 MWac of solar and 112.5 MWh of battery storage by February, MTerra Solar has already installed 1,288 MWdc of solar PV capacity and 622 battery energy storage system (BESS) units by the end of January.
The project's stability and reliability are evident as it begins to export 85 MW of constant power to the local grid. This achievement underscores the Philippines' ability to build large-scale renewable energy projects rapidly. MGEN's President and CEO, Emmanuel V. Rubio, emphasizes the project's significance, stating that it is just the beginning of a journey to expand capacity and impact, solidifying the Philippines' position as a leader in renewable energy delivery.
MTerra Solar's collaboration with the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) ensures seamless grid integration and stability as more solar power is added. This project not only showcases the Philippines' potential in renewable energy but also invites global attention, inspiring further exploration and investment in sustainable energy solutions.
