"We've known each other for years," Bartschi shared, explaining that the idea of working together had been brewing for some time. "I let Shawn know that when he was ready for a change, to get in touch." And in late 2025, Combs did just that, starting 2026 as Scott's new vice president.
But this isn't just about a job change; it's a homecoming for Combs. "I got my first Scott fly rod when I was 16," he reminisced. "I've fished with Scott rods for years, even before joining Orvis."
So, why reach out to Bartschi now? "It felt like the right time," Combs said. "A chance to work with Jim and help build Scott's brand further. Leaving Orvis was tough, but this felt right."
And this is the part most people miss: Bartschi's vision for the future. "I'm getting older," he admitted. "I want to ensure I have time for fishing and the things I love. I'm not going anywhere soon, but having Shawn here is a long-term investment. His industry experience is invaluable, and I'm thinking ahead."
But here's the controversial bit: some might say Bartschi is hiring his replacement. "Not quite," Bartschi clarified. "I'm here for the long haul, but having Shawn on board ensures Scott's future is in good hands."
So, what does this mean for Scott Fly Rods? Initially, not much will change for customers. Combs is taking his time, immersing himself in Scott's culture, and learning from the inside out. There are no immediate plans to revolutionize processes or products. Instead, Combs will bring his expertise to the rod-making process organically, when the time is right.
"Rushing isn't the answer," Bartschi emphasized. "A 24-month concept-to-market approach makes more sense."
Combs agreed, adding, "I'm not here to replicate Orvis. When the time comes, we'll evolve the Scott bloodline with innovation at its core."
Bartschi is excited about this collaboration, saying, "It's going to be a fun ride, learning from Shawn. I'm the old dog, learning new tricks."
For now, Combs is taking it slow, learning everything he can about Scott. Bartschi, with 35 years at Scott, isn't going anywhere soon, but he's excited to have Combs on board, allowing him to spend more time with dealers and the Scott community.
"Combs' hiring is about the long game," Bartschi concluded. "He'll lead when the time is right."
And Combs is ready for the challenge, recognizing the expectations that come with it. "I'm not here to dictate; I'm here to learn and grow. I'm looking for opportunities, not problems."
