However, the decision to face Lopes again so soon has raised eyebrows, especially after Volkanovski’s dominant decision win over him just 10 months ago at UFC 314 in Miami. MMA analyst Dan Hardy has labeled the fight an “unnecessary risk,” suggesting that while Volkanovski is likely to win via decision, the quick turnaround gives Lopes a unique opportunity to adjust his strategy. Hardy points out that Lopes, having already experienced five rounds with Volkanovski, will have valuable insights into the champion’s fighting style. “There’s nothing like being in there with someone for a bunch of time to get a feel for how they move,” Hardy explained. He also noted that fighters often expect certain moves, only to be surprised when they unfold differently in the ring. This, Hardy argues, could give Lopes an edge to evolve quickly, especially at this stage of his career.
And this is the part most people miss: Volkanovski, at 37, is at a point where his peak performance might be behind him. After consecutive knockout losses to Islam Makhachev and Ilia Topuria, questions about his longevity have surfaced. A loss in this rematch could very well signal the end of his Hall of Fame career. Yet, Hardy’s concerns are not shared by everyone. Volkanovski’s training partner, UFC lightweight Jamie Mullarkey, insists the champion is in top form. Mullarkey, who recently relocated to train full-time with Team Volkanovski, describes the champ as “firing” in camp and predicts a finish over Lopes. Mullarkey also dismisses retirement rumors, suggesting Volkanovski could defend his title multiple times this year.
The financial stakes are high too. Under the UFC’s new broadcasting deal, a finish would earn Volkanovski a $25,000 bonus, while a performance of the night could net him $100,000. Mullarkey is confident Volkanovski will deliver, calling the rematch “completely different” from their first encounter.
