They highlighted that 98% of trade will remain tariff-free, mirroring the EU's arrangement with South Korea. This is designed to protect an estimated £2 billion of UK exports from potential tariff increases.

But here's where it gets controversial... South Korea currently ranks as the UK's 25th largest trading partner, accounting for only 0.8% of the UK's total trade in the past year. Interestingly, during the same period, UK exports to South Korea decreased by 16.4%, while South Korean exports to the UK fell by 10.8%. South Korea's trade minister, however, is optimistic, highlighting the complementary nature of both economies. He emphasized the deal's focus on reducing non-tariff barriers, such as streamlining product origin rules, and creating new digital and investment protections. The Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) has yet to see a measurable impact on the UK economy by 2030 from deals with larger partners. The government, however, believes these agreements will boost the economy, create jobs, and reduce red tape for small businesses. Their own assessment of the deal with India projects only a modest increase in GDP, between 0.11% and 0.14%, a deal which also faced criticism for potentially impacting British workers.
Companies like Bentley Motors, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), and Guinness owner Diageo have welcomed the news. Frank-Steffen Walliser of Bentley Motors highlighted South Korea's importance to the luxury vehicle market, while Diageo's interim chief executive, Nik Jhangiani, anticipates increased demand for Guinness. The Scotch Whisky Association also sees this as an opportunity to increase Scotch Whisky's access to an important market, especially for single malts.
