Why Michael Zerafa is Underrated: Ex-World Champs Spill the Truth Before Tszyu Fight (2026)

Michael Zerafa: Is the 'Bad Boy' of Australian boxing actually underrated? Two former world champions are making a surprising case for him, and their insights might just change how you see his upcoming grudge match with Nikita Tszyu. Prepare to have your perceptions challenged!

As the tension builds towards what's shaping up to be one of the most intensely personal fights on Australian soil in recent memory, the boxing credentials of Michael "Pretty Boy" Zerafa are getting a serious boost from some heavy hitters – guys who've not only been in the ring at the highest level but have conquered it. They've earned the t-shirt, so to speak.

N. Tszyu vs Zerafa is scheduled for Friday, January 16th, starting at 7pm AEDT. It promises a fiery clash where trash talk and genuine animosity explode in the ring. Plus, we'll see Nelson Asofa-Solomona's pro debut. You can order it now with Main Event on Kayo Sports.

Zerafa has often been branded the 'bad boy' of Australian boxing, and his controversial remarks have certainly grabbed headlines. But here's where it gets controversial... could those comments be overshadowing his genuine talent and skill inside the ring?

One man who knows Zerafa's abilities firsthand is none other than British boxing superstar Kell Brook. Brook shared the ring with Zerafa back in 2018 in a super-welterweight final eliminator. While Brook walked away with a unanimous decision, it wasn't an easy victory. Zerafa pushed him to the limit over 12 grueling rounds.

"He’s definitely underrated,” Brook told Fox Sports Australia this week, a statement that might surprise many. "He did everything well [when we fought]. He was very tough – could take a shot very well. He had a good right hand and a big heart. Zerafa was good at it all.”

When asked about who he thought would win against “The Butcher” Nikita Tszyu, Brook remained on the fence. “It should be a really good fight, but I can’t pick a winner. It’s too close.”

Jeff Horn, another former world champion, also knows exactly what Zerafa brings to the table. He's faced him not once, but twice. And this is the part most people miss... their two-fight series is one of the most memorable rivalries in Australian boxing history. They split the series, battling it out across a combined 19 brutal rounds.

Their first encounter in 2019 resulted in a stunning upset. Zerafa stopped Horn, handing the former WBO welterweight champion one of the biggest defeats of his career. Horn later avenged that loss in a fiercely contested rematch in Brisbane, edging Zerafa by decision.

When asked if Zerafa’s sometimes inflammatory comments overshadowed his boxing prowess, Horn didn’t hesitate to agree. “That’s fair,” he told Fox Sports Australia. “He’s a good boxer, he’s fit and definitely one of the best guys to watch out there at the moment. He’s got a good jab, he moves well – he does everything well. I definitely underestimated him the first time I fought him. He hit me with some good shots.”

And what advice did Horn have for Nikita Tszyu as he prepared for the fight? "Be smart,” he explained. “I feel like if Nikita is to win this one he’ll have to be smart and not go in all guns blazing like he sometimes likes to do. He sometimes gets caught in a gun fight. I don’t think he should make this a gun fight this time.” In other words, avoid a brawl and stick to a strategic game plan.

Zerafa’s most recent defeat came in a world title challenge against Cuban southpaw Erislandy Lara, who stopped him in the second round. This loss raises a key question: Has Zerafa learned from this experience, or will he make the same mistakes against Tszyu?

Horn also pointed out that Tszyu’s southpaw stance could present a unique challenge for Zerafa. “He’ll be watchful, I guess,” said Horn. “I’m sure he’s versed other southpaws that he has been able to take care of pretty comfortably, but that last knockout against Lara might give him nightmares.”

Asked about how he expects the fight to unfold, Horn described it as an intriguing matchup. “It’s really interesting. I think it will be caution at the beginning, for a round or two, and then I think there will be moves from both of them. There may be a bit of a sprint in there to see if they can catch the other with good shots. I feel like they both want to see blood in this one and get the other one out of there."

"I think Zerafa will win – I’m not sure how. Maybe decision. I think he will be a little bit better than Nikita in there. It’s a tough one to pick, though.”

So, is Zerafa truly underrated? Are his controversial antics a smokescreen that hides a genuinely skilled boxer? And perhaps the most important question: Can he overcome the challenge posed by Nikita Tszyu? It seems even the experts are divided. What's your take? Let us know in the comments below! Do you agree with Horn and Brook, or do you think Zerafa's reputation is well-deserved?
